Is Adding a Built In Hot Tub Deck Right for Your Home?

built in hot tub deckIf you want your backyard to feel like a place you can truly relax, consider adding a built in hot tub deck. When you climb into your very own hot tub, the stress of the day will melt away. A deck makes your soaking even better, since you can enjoy the spa-like environment that perfectly leads to and from your home. Here’s everything you need to know about adding a hot tub deck.

Hot Tub Deck Benefits

The biggest benefit of owning a hot tub is, of course, that you have a private space you can use anytime you want. However, this is just one of the benefits to building a hot tub deck. Here are a few others:

  • Create a gathering space for your family and friends: It’s fun to spend time together in a hot tub. They’re great for small parties, time with your partner, and more.
  • Enjoy the health benefits: Soaking in heat can be great for some medical conditions. The warmth can increase your blood flow, the buoyancy can reduce stress on your joints, and the jets can massage sore muscles. • Make your deck more useful all year long: You can relax in your hot tub even when it is snowing outside. When you might otherwise be stuck inside, you can still enjoy your backyard.
  • Increase your home’s value: A new deck can help you sell your home faster and for more money. Even if you are not planning to sell anytime soon, a deck will increase your home’s equity. This typically helps you qualify for home equity loans and lines of credit if you need them.

A hot tub alone is great, but you’ll get more use from it with an attached deck. We can create a deck for your current hot tub or design a deck for a brand new hot tub.

Types of Hot Tub Decks

There are two types of hot tub deck plans. We would be happy to design either type of deck for your home.

Recessed

First, many homeowners like recessed hot tub decks. With this type of deck, the floor is level with the edge of the hot tub (or has a very low step in a semi-recessed option). This type of deck allows you to enjoy an unobstructed view. Many people find it easier to get into and out of a recessed or semi-recessed hot tub.

Exposed

That said, a typical exposed hot tub is the better option for some people. This type can still have a surrounding deck, but is easier to service and is safer for families with very young children. If your hot tub will be above ground, we’ll design a deck that perfectly matches your style. Our goal with every deck is to make it look like it was built as part of your home.

In both cases, we’ll ensure that your new deck is structurally sound to support the weight. You can’t simply place a hot tub on top of an existing wood deck. We’ll build your deck with the proper support so it can hold the spa of your choice.

Of course, deciding which type works best for you is just the first step. We’ll work with you to ensure we create a built in hot tub deck design that is perfect for your family. Our owner, Jim Brennan, personally meets with all clients. During this initial meeting, you can tell Jim about your built in hot tub ideas. However, if you aren’t sure what you want, Jim will walk you through the entire design process. You can learn more about the process here.

Built In Hot Tub Deck FAQs

It would be our pleasure to answer your questions. Here are a few common questions to get you started.

How can I make sure I hire the best deck contractor?

We recommend reading reviews, as well as looking at a gallery of past projects. Always work with a deck contractor who is upfront about pricing, offers a variety of design options, and can provide their license and insurance information like we can here at Structurally Speaking. Additionally, we recommend asking if the company uses an in-house construction team or hires subcontractors. Often, subcontractors do not accurately bring deck plans to life. We have our own team, and Jim oversees their work. This ensures that you get the exact deck design you want.

Can I enclose a hot tub deck?

Yes! In addition to decks, we also build sunrooms, enclosed porches, and other types of outdoor space. For an indoor hot tub, the space needs to have proper ventilation and humidity control. Also, like with an outdoor hot tub, an indoor hot tub needs proper support. It’s always easier to build a sunroom, porch, or deck with the hot tub in mind versus trying to add enough support later.

What will my finished deck look like?

We build decks of all shapes and sizes! In fact, “crazy” ideas are our specialty. Our team loves to talk to you about built in hot tub ideas that will work for your specific needs, including adding benches, pergolas, and more.
