This isn’t the only the only advantage, of course, but it is a major plus, especially if you like to entertain. With multiple levels, you have several spaces to enjoy your deck. You can create different seating areas with built-in benches or outdoor furniture. Additionally, you have space for an outdoor kitchen, planters or other garden features, entertainment areas, or even a hot tub deck.

Another advantages of a two story deck is that you can access it from multiple rooms in your home. For example, you might love to enjoy your morning coffee on an upper level attached to your master bedroom. At the same time, you can easily access your grill on a lower level from the kitchen.

• You have family with mobility issues. While we can build ramps as part of a two story deck, you might find it easier to keep things on a single level.
• Your preferred design aesthetic keeps your outdoor space as wide and open as possible. With a multi-level deck, you’ll typically have covered areas, which you may not want.
• A single-story deck can be less expensive than a multi-story deck. This depends on your deck design, of course, but having one level can help you stick to your budget. During your initial consultation, we’ll go over pricing for all options.
• You don’t have the space for multiple levels without major changes to the trees in your yard. We can tackle the challenge of large trees if necessary, but if you don’t want to remove them, a single story deck may make more sense.

Additionally, we know some people just like the look of a single story deck. There’s nothing wrong with that! In fact, we agree in some cases. Single story decks can look great with some home styles. What size deck should I build?

This depends on the size of your home and yard. With a two-level deck, you can keep more grass while also getting a bigger deck. Do I need a permit to add a deck?

It depends! In some counties and cities, you need a permit for any structure built up off the ground, including decks. Other times, you don’t need a permit for a deck since there are no walls/roof. We know the requirements throughout the Raleigh area, including Durham, Chapel Hill, Cary, and more. If you need a permit, we’ll take care of it.

We also work with homeowners associations to make sure you have permission for your new deck. This isn’t a problem in most cases, since your deck is typically in the backyard. However, it depends on your specific HOA. If needed, we’ll help you get permission.

What kind of maintenance does my new deck need?

We build decks using many different kinds of material. Wood, especially pressure-treated pine is a popular options because it is low-cost. This material, however, does require more annual maintenance to prevent damage from mold, mildew, and insects. Other materials, such as exotic hardwoods, vinyl, and composite cost a bit more, but need less maintenance.
