10 Design Ideas for Your Cozy and Cool Custom Hot Tub Deck

custom hot tubImagine finishing your work day and slipping into your very own bubbling hot tub. Is there any better way to relax? Here at Structurally Speaking, we have experience building custom hot tub decks. These decks support the weight of the hot tub and give you the perfect spa-like experience in your own backyard.

Because we build custom decks rather than simply providing cookie cutter solutions, we can add in features to make your deck even better. Here are ten cool deck ideas you can consider for your hot tub deck.

Add a Pergola for Protection from the Sun

Depending on the location of your new hot tub, you might need some protection from the sun. To fully immerse yourself in the spa experience, you need to be completely comfortable, which is hard to do with the sun in your eyes.

A pergola is a great option to solve this problem. With a pergola, you can control how much of the sun you block. Pergolas also make great structures for climbing plants if you want more of a rain forest feel for your hot tub deck. Learn more about our pergolas here.

Exotic Hardwoods as a Decking Material

You can take your hot tub deck to the next level by using exotic hardwoods as the decking material. Exotic hardwoods are a little more expensive than woods such as pine. However, they make a huge impact. They’re perfect if you want a real wow factor. Hardwoods can also last longer than some other kinds of decking material. Plus, they stand up well to the heaviness of a hot tub deck.

Keep in mind, exotic hardwoods aren’t total budget busters. Many varieties can still be less expensive than composite. During your initial consultation, we’ll talk about budget to help you choose the best decking material for your project.

Build a Combination Deck and Sunroom/Porch

Do you want to get even more use out of your hot tub deck? Don’t just stop with building a deck! Instead, build an entire outdoor living space.

We customize every deck project to perfectly suit your needs. A combination deck/sunroom makes sense for many families. Check out this blog post about the benefits to building a sunroom. If a sunroom isn’t right for you, you can also consider a screened porch to add a covered element to your outdoor living space.

Built-in Benches and Bars

We love to help homeowners make their custom hot tub decks more functional. One of the easiest ways to do this is to have our deck builders add benches or bars around the hot tub area.

When you are in the hot tub, you’ll need a place to set your drink, right? Benches and bars also work great for towels, food, books, or anything you need to set down within reach while you enjoy the water.

Multiple Levels for a Unique Design

A hot tub deck doesn’t have to be a simple square. Although, it can be! However, we love helping homeowners add a unique multi-level design. This allows your deck to have multiple “zones” for different activities.

In other words, we can create an area for your hot tub, but also areas for relaxing in a hammock, enjoying a fire pit or outdoor fire place, grilling or doing other types of cooking outside, gardening, and more. A multi-level deck design helps to break up the space, especially when you’re entertaining or if you have a large family.

Create a Zen Space Filled with Plants

Your deck can be so much more than slabs of wood. We can help you seamlessly integrate plants into your new deck. This includes:

  • Built-in planters
  • A deck built around trees or other mature, large plants
  • Walls and other structures for climbing plants
  • Spaces set aside within the deck for gardening
  • Storage areas for your gardening tools

During your consultation, let us know if you want to focus on adding plants as part of your new deck.

Entertain with Outdoor TVs, Speakers, and More

As you’re enjoying your hot tub, you might want to also watch a movie, listen to music, binge your favorite podcast, or otherwise enjoy some entertainment. We can make this possible.

Part of your hot tub deck design might focus on outdoor speakers, televisions, and projectors. Sure, you can get cheap waterproof speakers, but we can build them into your deck for an optimal experience.

Storage for Your Hot Tub Items

A hot tub is not all fun and games, unfortunately. It does need a bit of care over time. This includes checking the water chemistry and adding chemicals as needed, removing debris that gets into the water, and occasionally draining the tub to scrub it. Read more about hot tub maintenance here.

We can’t promise to make this part of hot tub ownership fun, but we can make it much easier with built-in storage for your supplies. This is also a great place to store extra towels, robes, and other items you might need for your hot tub.

Location Options for Your Custom Hot Tub

As part of our design process, we’ll talk to you about your different options for your hot tub deck location. Sometimes, it makes sense to have the hot tub right outside your door. Other times, it might make sense to have a detached deck and gazebo area farther away from the house.

It really depends on several factors, including the view you want from your hot tub, privacy in relation to your neighbors, who will be using the hot tub, and more. If you aren’t sure which location is best, we’ll go over the pros and cons of each option.

Benefits of a Hot Tub Deck

Hot tub decks are a hot topic of discussion in the home improvement and outdoor living industries. Both Travel + Leisure and HGTV recently covered them and provide numerous creative design ideas. If you are considering adding one to your house, then it is important to consider all the advantages they provide homeowners.

There are four categories of benefits that a hot tub deck offers homeowners. Those are:

  1. Homeownership benefits
  2. Physical health benefits
  3. Mental health benefits
  4. Social benefits
Homeownership Benefits

One of the biggest advantages to homeowners who choose to build a hot tub deck is that it increases their house’s value. How much value it adds depends on various factors, including the condition of the spa and deck. In some instances it can add to your home’s value up to 50% of the cost.

Another great benefit to homeowners is they create their own private luxurious backyard retreat right at home. They do not feel the need to go out and pamper themselves, because their home feels like a vacation destination.

Physical Health Benefits

There are many physical health benefits to soaking in a spa or hot tub. A few of the top ones include:

  • Creates muscle relaxation
  • Relieves joint pain, like arthritis
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Burns calories
  • Improves insulin sensitivity
  • Restores flexibility
  • Alleviates fibromyalgia symptoms
  • Lessens lower back pain
  • Reduce headaches

Now that you know the numerous physical health benefits, it is important to know regular hot tub soaking also provides several mental health benefits.

Mental Health Benefits

People often focus on their physical health but tend to overlook their mental well-being. However, Psychology Today experts share this way of thought is not good for your overall health, as your mental health is equally, if not more, important. Luckily, regular soaking in a hot tub provides vital mental health benefits. A few of the top mental health benefits include:

  • Decreases anxiety
  • Reduces stress
  • Enhances sleep
  • Improves self-esteem and confidence
  • Encourages socialization

That last bullet point hints to our final category of benefits, which are social benefits.

Social Benefits

Socialization is imperative not just to our society, but to every individual human. It is how we grow, learn, and connect. Therefore, it is crucial to know that a hot tub or spa deck provides multiple social benefits to homeowners.

First, it is a great space for bonding among couples. Quality time together drives a healthy relationship. Luckily, a hot tub deck provides a place where couples can relax and talk together in nature – without the distractions of electronics or the need to leave home.

Next, it is also the perfect outdoor living space for spending quality family time. Do not forget children love hot tubs just as much as adults! This pediatric site provides some great safety tips and guidelines for hot tubs and children.

Finally, it is the ultimate entertaining space. Your friends will be thrilled to come over to enjoy sipping wine, talking the night away, and relaxing in the hot tub together.

Now that you know the abundant benefits of a hot tub or spa deck, it is time to consider what types of decks are compatible for holding hot tubs.

Compatible Types of Decks for a Hot Tub

There are two aspects to consider when installing a hot tub on a deck.

  1. Do you already have a deck and want to modify it to include a hot tub?
  2. Are you designing a new deck that will include a hot tub?

Both have the potential to include a hot tub, but several factors will impact your finished deck. Those include:

  • Deck design
  • Size of deck
  • Hot tub or spa design
  • Weight of hot tub or spa
  • Deck materials
  • Location of hot tub or spa on deck
  • View from deck
Deck Design

If you already have a deck, then the design will need to be modified to accommodate the hot tub. However, if you are building a new deck you can simply design the deck with the hot tub in mind.

The first question to consider is will the deck be fully recessed, partially recessed, or completely above ground? It might seem easier to step into a fully recessed hot tub or spa, but it can make it trickier to get in and out. A full recessed hot tub often leads to people falling in or slipping. Additionally, hot tubs require a lot of maintenance, so it is beneficial to homeowners to have a partially recessed or completely above ground hot tub or spa. Most professionals recommend that it be at least 17 to 24 inches above the decking.

Below are a few questions that we often ask in our free, no-obligation consultation regarding deck design.

  1. Is your deck, or your future deck, a short deck, raised deck, or multi-leveled deck? These design aspects play a vital role in if, and where, it is possible to place a hot tub on the deck.
  2. Do you have a pool already and are you adding on this hot tub deck as an additional outdoor space?
  3. Would you like the deck or patio door near the hot tub? This is a great idea if you plan to use the hot tub in the cooler months. It means there is less time between being out of the water and back into the heated indoors.

These are only some of the questions to consider when adding a hot tub to your existing or new backyard deck.

Size of Deck

The square foot size of a deck directly impacts if and where you can place a hot tub or spa on your deck. Hot tubs range in size. They can be smaller for two people only or larger to accommodate more than seven people. Everything in between is available so there are numerous options to choose from for homeowners. When discussing building a hot tub deck, the size of the deck is among one of the first things we will need to know.

Hot Tub or Spa Design

Like size, the design and shape of the hot tub or spa plays an instrumental role on where it can be placed on your existing or new deck. There might be limitations on exiting decks to what options of hot tubs will work on that deck. However, on a new deck you can design the deck to accommodate any desired hot tub design.

Weight of Hot Tub or Spa

There are three weight factors to consider when building a hot tub deck.

  1. Actual weight of hot tub or spa.
  2. Weight of water required to fill the hot tub or spa.
  3. Approximate weight of maximum people hot tub or spa fits.

Depending on the size and design of the hot tub or spa, its weight will vary from approximately 600 to 800 pounds. That is the average empty weight. It is important to factor in how much overall weight support is needed; therefore, the weight of the water and occupants must be factored into the equation.

One gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds. Depending on the size, the range of how many gallons of water a hot tub holds varies. On average, a hot tub or spa holds anywhere from 300 to 675 gallons of water. This means the weight of water needed to fill a hot tub ranges from 2,502 to 5,629.5 pounds.

Do not forget about factoring in the weight of the people planning to use the hot tub. The average person weighs 181 pounds. Therefore, if you have a two-person hot tub then you need to factor in around 362 pounds. Whereas, if you have a seven-person hot tub then you need to factor in around 1,267 pounds.

When you consider all three of these variables the average loaded weight of a hot tub or spa usually ranges from approximately 3,000 pounds to 8,000 pounds. That is a lot of weight! This means it is imperative to have a deck made of materials that can support that weight.

Deck Materials

If you’re designing a new deck, then it is easier to initially select materials that you know will support the full hot tub or spa weight.

The most common deck materials are:

  • Composite decking
  • Pressure treated lumber
  • Exotic hardwood

Each has pros and cons, especially when considering its use for a hot tub deck. A composite deck tends to be one of the most common choices for its easy maintenance, lower cost, and durability.

During our free, no-obligation consultation we will discuss what decking materials you want to consider and their effectiveness for hot tub decks.

Another material to consider is reinforcement materials. Deck contractors use these materials both for modifying a current deck or building a new deck to support the hot tub weight.

The top four ideas to reinforce your deck are:

  1. Fasteners – adding to the ledger board
  2. Extra joist hangers – installing those and securing with stainless steel deck screws
  3. Beams – adding extras beams at every corner
  4. Concrete slab – adding a reinforcement concrete slab
Location of Hot Tub or Spa on Deck

A deck design also plays a key role in the hot tub placement. First, it should be somewhere that has the structural support for the hot tub or spa. Additionally, it should not be somewhere that people would easily run into the hot tub or fall into the hot tub.

View from Deck

The placement of the hot tub or spa often depends upon the view from the deck. One question to ask yourself is, do you want it against the house for more shade and privacy? Or would you rather place it further out on the deck to capitalize on your view. If you have a secluded backyard that provides a beautiful nature scene among the trees, then you might want to place it where the view is unobstructed.

Hot Tub Deck Design Ideas

One of the best parts about designing a hot tub deck is the many additional add-ons or features available for consideration. Below are some of the most popular design ideas to ponder:

  • Hooks/rack for towels or robes
  • Pergola
  • Privacy fence
  • Lattice fencing with fabric or curtains
  • Bench around hot tub
  • Steps
  • Outdoor furniture
  • Gazebo
  • Bar and seating around hot tub
  • Plants to create backyard oasis
  • Trellis
  • Fire pit
  • Screened-in area to keep bugs away
  • Outdoor kitchen
  • Lighting to create ambiance
  • Handrail
  • Outdoor home theater

We are happy to discuss these and any other hot tub deck design ideas you have in a free, no-obligation consultation.

Make Your World More Relaxing – Create a Deck with Hot Tub

deck with hot tubIf you’re feeling a bit stressed and wondering if adding a deck with hot tub to your world may help, you’re not alone. A spa with flowing water may be exactly what you need for a sense of well-being and peace. In fact, Herman Melville acknowledges our intrinsic attraction to this liquid gold in Moby Dick.

“…whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off—then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can…”

Likely, the allure of water began with time itself. Initially, it was a matter of survival. Civilizations popped up around oceans, lakes, rivers and streams. The flowing waters within are essential to life. Moreover, water calms us; it invigorates us. Notably, the word spa comes from the Latin “salas per aquam”. Literally, this means “health from water.” Hot tubs of one sort or another have been used since ancient times, and the three ways in which they heal the body have remained consistent.

More importantly, the soothing effects of water keep us from “methodically knocking people’s hats off.” While Structurally Speaking certainly doesn’t agree with knocking accessories off of each other, we would like to knock your socks off with our creative hot tub deck design!

A Deck with Hot Tub is Delightful

Obviously, we can’t install the sea into your backyard. However, we can make your outdoor space delightful all the same. Trust us, if we could bring the ocean to you, we would. Although, if you combine a deck with hot tub fun, it makes your outdoor living space a soothing water wonderland.

Before we get into the details of designing a hot tub deck, let’s consider how a spa deck enhances your enjoyment of outdoor space. First, think about how you use your outdoor space. We find that many of our clients have three common goals.

The Real Way to Relax

Whether you have a patio, wood deck, concrete pad or just a small backyard, being outside seems to soothe the soul. Getting up early and heading outside to hear the birds welcome the morning is a peaceful way to begin your day. Similarly, it’s a fabulous way to decompress and end it as well. Lounge on your outdoor furniture as the sun sinks sleepily into the horizon. Let the stress and worries of the day set with it. Read a book; enjoy some music. Or, simply sit and watch the fireflies as the sound of nature plays in the background.

Enjoy Entertaining

Perhaps, you prefer to share these entertaining moments with others. Joining friends and family in your yard space is a great way to do that. Especially, this is true now that many more folks are gathering in their yard rather than indoors. Gathering on outdoor furniture and chatting is a safe way to enjoy each other’s company. Or, playing a round of cards, board games or yard games is a perfect way to enjoy your existing deck, patio or backyard deck. Adding an outdoor hot tub to that idea makes it even more entertaining and relaxing.

Beautify Your Outdoor Living Space

Sometimes, creating an outdoor oasis is simply about enhancing the beauty of your home. We tend to focus on the inside. Extending the ambiance outdoors creates an even more pleasing environment. Plus, adding aesthetics to your yard increases the value of your house. Therefore, if you ever wish to sell, your addition will pay off. Not only is it an investment that you can enjoy while you’re there, future homeowners will appreciate your efforts as well. Hot tub installation increases this value even further.

Creative Work Space

Moreover, we’ve also noticed a new goal our clients desire. Obviously, the trend of working-from-home is on the rise. Even when our world gets back to some sort of normalcy, many people enjoy this opportunity. Having the option to work outside on the perfect deck is a useful way to add a square foot or two to your work space. Better yet, a deck with hot tub waiting for you to hop in for a quick break is a fabulous job perk!

Common Hot Tub Deck Questions

Next, let’s address a few questions that our clients have about their hot tub deck. Foremost, can you put hot tub on decking? The short answer is absolutely! However, you do need a professional who understands how to properly reinforce a deck to support the weight of the hot tub once water is in it. An existing deck may have older boards that are rotting. Rotting wood could collapse under the weight. Additionally, your existing deck may not be built to code which means excess weight could be dangerous.

Fortunately, our team at Structurally Speaking has decades of experience in deck design and can find issues that may exist. Likewise, we use our expertise to adjust your existing deck if needed. While we thrive on creative design, safety is our most important goal.

Similarly, you may wonder what size hot tub will best match your needs? Often, this boils down to your outdoor space, patio or deck size. Personal preference and budget also come into play. Speaking of budget, that’s generally a good place to start and then you can work backwards. After all, once you know how much you want to spend, it’s easier to narrow down what may work best.

The Process of Designing and Building Your Hot Tub Deck

During our free consultation, we go over these questions and more. In fact, we have an entire process to make sure that we meet your needs from start to finish.

We begin with an initial free consultation. This meeting is the most important step — it allows us to lay the groundwork for a successful construction project. During this detailed consultation, we go through a series of questions and examples. Likewise, we focus on finding the specific functional and aesthetic goals you want to meet. Getting to know you individually helps us get a better feel for what you need and want.

After taking extensive measurements and photographs, we take a physical survey of the area and the home itself. This process also includes the impact the project will have on the interior view from the home. Then, we take time to discuss your budget, making sure all parties have a realistic idea of what to expect. If everybody agrees, we schedule a second meeting.

This second meeting is your design presentation. At this point, we complete a review of your functional and aesthetic goals of the building project, ensuring we meet your needs and desires. Our owner, Jim Brennan, offers you at least two design recommendations, which are scaled drawings that show all elevations and viewpoints.

These scaled drawings are done with a laptop computer which allows you to actually visualize the drawings in three-dimensional clarity. After discussing these recommendations, you choose the design you like the most. At that point, you and the designer will make any changes needed, until it is the exact design you envision on your home. Then, and only then, a decision is made as whether or not to do business and move to the next step.

Once you verify changes and agree on the design, we move forward to project construction. From the moment our specialists arrive on your property to the minute we leave, Structurally Speaking promises to be thorough, attentive and respectful of your property. We strive to minimize the intrusion that home construction projects are to you and your family’s lives — we will do everything it takes to expedite the creation of your deck.

Types of Hot Tubs

Finally, let’s get to the fun stuff! Before your meeting, it may help to have an idea of all the hot tub options available. You’ve probably heard of many of the manufacturers. Just a few include Bullfrog Spas, Jacuzzi, Caldera Spas and Thermo Spas. They each have a wide variety of thrilling choices to choose from.

Before you get too ahead of yourself in all these varieties, think first about what size spa you’d like to have. This depends on a few criteria. First, think about how many folks you wish to have in the spa at one time. Hot tub owners sometimes prefer a cozy 2-person bubbly addition or want to go for larger fun that fits up to 8 people at a time. Second, consider each square foot your spa will take up. Make sure you’ll still have room for other activities in your outdoor space. Third, your budget may affect how large a spa you wish to purchase. If you’re not sure what you want yet, don’t worry. We can help!

Then, decide on the shape and how your spa will rest on your patio or decking. The most traditional shapes are a square or round hot tub. However, more unique shapes are available. Next, determine what sort of hot tub platform you’ll use for your new hot tub. Will you opt for a sunken hot tub or do you prefer for it to rest on your main deck floor?

To spark some design ideas, be sure to check out our gallery of past projects!

Fun Additions to Your Deck

Similarly, think about your deck as whole and other enhancements you can make to the design. For instance, a pergola is a great way to add a little shade and class to your wooden deck. Or, a fire pit to keep you toasty when you hop out of the spa is a great addition for cooler months. Plus, it’s fabulous for s’mores, hot dogs and other delightful activities year-round. Similarly, built-in benches are a great addition. They provide extra space to place towels or guests who decide not to soak!

Think about the overall look as well. You may want the design of an elevated deck that not only adds space but breaks the visual monotony of a one-level deck. Deck lighting comes into play as well. Not only is it visually pleasing, it adds to safety. For instance, lights near each stair make walking safer in the evening. Especially, this is true with slippery, wet feet that have been soaking in the spa!

Finally, consider even the smallest touches. Add some speakers for surround sound. Or, hang some windchimes to sway and sing in the gentle breezes. Planters, string lighting, candles…there are all sorts of fun and useful décor items to enhance your space!

Now that you have all these fabulous ideas, it’s time to find the perfect deck builder!

  1. Initial Consultation—the first step is a free, no-obligation consultation with owner Jim Brennan. He asks a series of questions to uncover your specific functional and aesthetic goals. Then, their team will take extensive photographs and measurements as well as a physical survey of your yard. 3. Project Construction—after the first steps are completed to your satisfaction, construction begins. This is the most exciting part of the process! Right from the beginning, Structurally Speaking will make sure it is as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. That includes being thorough, respectful, and attentive throughout the entire project. They minimize intrusion so your family can carry on with your normal, everyday life. Plus, they can help with documents, permits, and other documents required by homeowner associations and local regulations.

What is a Composite Deck?

Composite decking uses a mix of wood fiber, plastic, and a binding agent. A composite deck offers many benefits over traditional wood decking, including:

  • Durability—sure, hardwood looks and feels great at first. But composite materials resist fading, staining, scratching, and mold. So, unlike wood, they won’t crack or rot over the lifetime of the deck. Plus, they are insect-proof and splinter-free. This makes them perfect for families with young children and pets.
  • Maintenance—wood also requires constant upkeep. With a composite deck you don’t need to sand, stain, or paint—ever. All you need to do is occasionally use soap and water to clean dirt and debris. So, they last—and look beautiful and new—for decades. Many composites even come with a fade and stain warranty for added peace of mind.
  • Design—composite boards feature wood grain patterns and rich colors. And the options for colors are virtually endless. From deep earth tones to fiery reds and cool greys, these boards can match your exact style. Plus, they pair perfectly with railing and stairs, gates, and more to match for a custom outdoor living area.
  • Sustainability—one of the best aspects of composite is that they look and feel just like real wood. But unlike real wood, they don’t have a detrimental effect on the environment. Composite boards are made from recycled content, including reclaimed wood and recycled plastic from grocery bags.
  • Value—composite decks offer tremendous value. Sometimes, the initial cost of composite decks can be higher than their traditional wood counterparts. However, they more than make up for it in the long run. Factoring in maintenance and upkeep, composite decks offer more value and even pay for themselves in roughly 10 years. They also add to the value of your home, when you decide to sell. The no-maintenance aspect is a huge selling point! Also, decks are becoming a staple on home buyers’ lists of requirements.
